CRFC welcomes Martin Johnson
WINNING World Cup England rugby captain Martin Johnson enthralled an audience of more than 70 people at a charity dinner in Henley last week.
Mr Johnson entertained the diners at the home of Brian and Sue Westmacott and a total of more than £4,000 was raised for the Tom Haycraft
Memorial Fund, of which the former British Lion is a patron, and Claverdon Rugby Club Junior Colts. The money for the Colts will be used for a new set of shirts, a reserve strip, and various items of training equipment + professional coaching as required in the coming season.
The catering was provided by Sue Westmacott through her company Sue Dalby Catering Ltd The dinner was organised by Herald Newseditor and Claverdon Club founder Dale le Vack who welcomed other distinguished guests including John and Paula Haycraft, trustees of the Fund, Basil Sayer, President of Claverdon RFC, former Stratford RFC captain Tony Bird, Frank Fathers, an original Claverdon player from the 1960s, and Andrew Trotman, former captain of the Great Britain Olympic Dragon Boat Crew.
Martin Johnson spoke for over an hour, and also answered questions from the diners, and the informal manner of his approach (not a single profanity)
was much appreciated. There were several toasts, including one to Sue Westmacott, for once again providing a meal of the highest quality. Her daughter and son in law ran the bar with great efficiency and the club president reported that he never had to wait for than a few seconds for his next drink.
